I get many calls about the paint and colors by the UK paint company, Farrow & Ball. I admit to loving their limited palette of sophisticated colors and placing them whenever clients want to work with this paint.

You need a painter who is familiar with this paint, or who is willing to learn! It really is a 3-coat process. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. What we call a Primer, here in the USA, is really the first coat of the color in the Farrow & Ball system. The F&B Primer is what gives the F&B colors (colours!) their trademark depth and glory. Skip it at your peril. The finishes are gorgeous and the rich colors are worth the extra step.

Where to buy the paint in the USA? In the Greater Philadelphia area go to Bahdeebahdu. It is an EXPERIENCE to go there; don’t miss it.

Other F&B stateside stores are listed on the website. Here is the website.

  1. So happy to know this information about F&B. I had my office painted with their color Borrowed Light and it was not the rich color I expected. I didn’t know about their primer, and I’m sure the painter only used one coat because it went on white walls. Thanks so much for this information.

    1. Borrowed Light is very beautiful.
I wish F&B would rename their primer to Undercoat Color, because that’s what it is – the crucial first layer of color that MAKES the final color. Each color in their palette is assigned a specific primer: light, middle and deep toned. Thanks so much for your comment.
